THE ARTIST'S BEGINNING

    Alfonso Segovia as an artist

Alfonso Segovia has always shown admiration and respect for nature since he was a child. Segovia’s first drawing and poem were based on two butterflies that were flying around a lemon tree simultaneously, during his kindergarten days. The butterflies were a Monarch and a Swallowtail that took Segovia’s mind away from class. The artist was in his own world, ignoring the insistent calls of Mrs. Ernestine at that time, causing her to pulled hard Segovia’s ears awakening him from his dream. When the teacher realized what the artist had painted and wrote on the piece of paper, she decided to take a picture of Segovia, which he refused immediately. Mrs. Ernestine insisted, and sat Segovia in front of a table, and handling a pencil and notebook, she called her brother to have the picture taken to the young artist.

The very young artist’s imagination flew once again rapidly when saw the teacher’s brother appearing behind a large dark cloth, holding a wooden extension camera on a tripod. The artist thought for a moment that a monster will come out the camera’s lens, and continued insisting that he didn’t want his picture taken. The sound and the bright light of the flash captured the artist’s serious moment, and the teacher grabbed the note that Segovia wrote after that – ‘stupid teacher.’ Those simple two words cost the very young Segovia to be struck 50 times in each of the palms of his hands, and to be knelt on corn grains, facing a white wall, holding a book on each hand in sign of a cross. He didn’t cry out… but that never ended his dreams and passion for painting, writing, sculpting and for life!
